Chao only reincarnate when the have been treated well. For example if you take care of your chao nicely and care for him he will reincarnate and be reborned as the same chao but a baby. When your chao reincarnates their swimming, flying, power, running, and stamina all go to level one. Also even when your chao is dark it will still reincarnate if it was treated well by a dark character and the reason it was dark was because it was taken care from a dark character nicely. Your chao's cocoon should be pink when it is reincarnating and if it's not pink it will not reincarnate. Chaos die when they are 5 years old but if you take care of it well instead of it die in five years it will reincarnate in thoughs five years. When they reincarnate and become a baby again you have to treat it well again or this time it will die. When chao are dieing and are not going to reincarnate their cocoon will turn grey. Chao die when they turn five years old if don't take care of him.

Chao dies and you never see your chao again.

There is a time when Chao die. When Chao are 5 years old (15 hours), they will form a gray cocoon and they will die. However, if you were very, VERY special to them, they will form a pink cocoon and live another life (and so on and soforth). Reincarnating Chao is not only nice to do, it is required to get Chao like the Crystal Chao, the Chaos Chao and other rare Chao that you can't get by just having it live for one life.
       When a Chao reincarnates, all of it's stats go back to level one, and it keeps a lot of it's animal parts. If it was a Hero Chao, it will have little ears coming from it's head already. For Dark Chao, it will be darkish and will have that spike on the back. It will also like the same master that it liked the most in it's past life. Pretty cool, huh?
       To keep your Chao alive and not die, just follow some strict and simple (yes, at the same time), guidelines.

-Never throw your Chao
-Never attack your Chao
-Bring it to the doctor when it is sick
-Keep your Chao well-fed
-When your Chao wants attention, pet it or hold it and snuggle it
-Give it it's favorite fruit once in a while (not too much, or it will get     to be a spoiled punk)
-When your Chao is drowning, take it out
-Don't make it jealous by giving another Chao too much attention

     If you just follow these rules, your Chao will be sure to live a long life and will reincarnate many times (I think there is a limit to how many times a Chao can reincarnate, but I ain't sure...).
